Edo Governor Suspends Attorney-General, Local Government Commission Chair Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

In a dramatic turn of events, the Edo State Government has suspended the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie, alongside the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Damian Lawani, over allegations of grave financial and official misconduct.

The announcement was made early Thursday morning in Benin, the state capital, through a statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Ikhilor. The government emphasized that the suspension, which takes immediate effect, is essential to facilitate a thorough investigation into the allegations.

Governor Monday Okpebholo wasted no time in asserting his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability. He swiftly approved the suspension and directed the establishment of an investigative committee to probe the matter.

“It is hereby announced for the information of the general public that Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved the suspension of the Chairman of the Edo Local Government Service Commission, Damian Lawani, and the Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie, over allegations of grave official and financial infractions.

“The suspension is with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The government assured that the investigative panel will be given full autonomy to examine the allegations and submit its recommendations without interference.

The development has sent shockwaves through the Edo political landscape, especially as both officials had only been appointed less than three months ago. Their abrupt suspension raises concerns about internal governance, financial transparency, and the administration’s efforts to uphold integrity.

While the details of the alleged financial infractions remain undisclosed, the government’s decisive action underscores its zero-tolerance stance on corruption. As the investigation unfolds, all eyes remain on the findings of the committee and the fate of the embattled officials.

This suspension marks the latest in a series of governance shake-ups in the state, reinforcing the governor’s determination to enforce accountability at all levels of leadership.
