The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has charged military commanders to remain proactive and innovative in tackling evolving security threats facing Nigeria. He emphasized the need to leverage technology, enhance intelligence-sharing, and foster interagency collaboration to maintain a strategic advantage over adversaries.
General Musa made this call on Wednesday at the opening of the 2025 CDS Joint Task Force Commanders Conference, themed “Enhancing Jointness Across All Theatres of Operations,” held in Abuja. He commended the unwavering dedication and sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces in combating insurgency, terrorism, banditry, and other security challenges across the country.
Strengthening the Military’s Edge in Modern Warfare
Highlighting the professionalism, resilience, and unity of purpose demonstrated by troops in recent successful operations, Musa stressed the need for continuous vigilance.
> “While we celebrate our achievements, we must remain alert. The security landscape is rapidly evolving, presenting new and complex challenges,” he said.
The CDS identified emerging threats such as the proliferation of armed drones, transnational crimes, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) as growing concerns that demand adaptive and technology-driven responses.
“This conference provides a crucial opportunity to critically assess these threats and develop actionable strategies. We must strengthen our intelligence-sharing frameworks and deepen interagency cooperation to outpace the enemy,” he added.
Musa reaffirmed his leadership commitment to fostering a people-centric and professional Armed Forces of Nigeria, fully equipped to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities. He underscored the importance of jointness—the seamless integration of military operations—as a cornerstone for operational success in today’s dynamic security environment.
> “Our commanders play a pivotal role in fostering collaboration. I urge you to continue building bridges, sharing resources, and working as a unified force,” he said.
Expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and commitment to the Nigerian military, General Musa assured that the armed forces would remain resolute in safeguarding national security.
“As we deliberate in this conference, let us remember that the security of Nigeria is a collective responsibility. By working together, we can secure a safer and more prosperous future for all Nigerians,” he stated.
Adding his voice to the discussion, former Chief of Defence Staff, retired Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, emphasized the importance of the conference in shaping effective military strategies. He described it as a platform for critical reflection and forward-thinking solutions to address contemporary security challenges.
With Nigeria facing an increasingly complex security landscape, the conference serves as a crucial gathering of top military minds, ensuring that the nation’s armed forces remain agile, prepared, and always ahead of the threat curve.
