Court Jails UNIUYO Professor for Three Years Over Electoral Fraud

UYO – The High Court in Akwa Ibom State has sentenced Professor Ignatius Uduk of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) to three years imprisonment for electoral fraud committed during the 2019 general elections.

The judgment, delivered on Wednesday by Justice Bassey Nkanang of Uyo High Court 5, followed a three-count charge filed against him by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). While the court acquitted the professor on Count 1, he was found guilty on Counts 2 and 3 and sentenced to three years imprisonment for each charge, to be served concurrently.

Professor Uduk, a renowned academic in Human Kinetics, was accused of manipulating election results, an offense that INEC has been actively prosecuting as part of its efforts to uphold electoral integrity.

This verdict marks the second time a UNIUYO professor has been convicted for electoral misconduct. Professor Peter Ogban, also a lecturer at the institution, was similarly tried by INEC and sentenced to three years imprisonment in 2019 for electoral malpractices during the same election.

The case underscores the increasing scrutiny on electoral offenders and reinforces INEC’s resolve to ensure credible elections in Nigeria.
