Terror in Ebonyi: Suspected Herdsmen Massacre Scores, Raze Houses in Amegu Nkalaha

Abakaliki – Tragedy struck in Amegu Nkalaha, a community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, as suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attack, killing scores of residents, injuring many, and setting homes ablaze.

According to reports, the assailants stormed the village in the early hours of Sunday, wielding machetes and firearms, leaving a trail of bloodshed and destruction. While the exact death toll remains unknown, eyewitnesses say the casualties are staggering.

The Chairperson of Ishielu LGA, Mrs. Ifeoma Agwu, confirmed the horrific incident, stating that the evacuation of bodies was still ongoing.
“We are currently transporting the victims to the mortuary. I cannot speak much on the situation now, but we will provide more details later,” she said.

A prominent community member and former ASUU Chairman of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Professor Ndubuisi Idenyi, also confirmed the attack, describing it as a “black Sunday” for the people of Amegu Nkalaha.
“My village was attacked today by herdsmen. Many lives were lost, and homes were reduced to ashes,” he lamented.

Prof. Idenyi further revealed that residents were still searching for more victims, especially those killed while working on their farms.
“We cannot yet determine the full number of casualties. The scene is horrifying,” he added.

Meanwhile, when contacted for a response, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joshua Ukandu, claimed ignorance of the attack but assured that he would investigate and provide updates.

This latest assault has reignited concerns over rising insecurity in the region, with residents calling for urgent government intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
