In a daring and successful operation, Nigerian troops have dealt a significant blow to banditry in Taraba State, neutralizing a dangerous criminal and recovering an impressive cache of weapons. The operation, carried out by the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in collaboration with Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), targeted a notorious bandit hideout in Angwan Bala, a remote area in the Kambari section of Karim Lamido Local Government Area.
The assault, which unfolded on February 2, was initiated following critical intelligence on the movement of armed bandits in the region. As the troops approached the hideout, they were met with fierce resistance from the criminals, who opened fire in a desperate attempt to defend their stronghold. However, the Nigerian soldiers, trained and resolute, swiftly overpowered the attackers, resulting in the neutralization of one bandit and the surrender of 23 others, including 19 men and 4 women.
A thorough search of the camp unearthed a staggering arsenal of weaponry, including four AK-47 rifles, five AK-47 magazines, 80 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, an English-made pistol, two locally fabricated firearms, 28 cutlasses, 48 daggers and jackknives, as well as 16 motorcycles—tools that had been used in the bandits’ operations across the region.
Investigations into the bandits’ operations revealed that these criminals, originally from Plateau State, had bribed a local chief in Amar village with ₦1.5 million to set up their camp in the area. This startling discovery highlights the extent of the bandits’ network and the need for continuous vigilance from both security forces and local communities.
Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, the Commander of 6 Brigade, praised the troops for their bravery and professionalism in the face of such danger. He reassured the public of the Brigade’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability to Taraba State and its neighboring areas. “This operation is a clear message that we are resolute in our mission to rid Taraba of criminal elements and prevent it from becoming a sanctuary for terrorists,” he said.
The General also urged the public to stay alert and collaborate with security agencies in the ongoing battle against insecurity. “The fight against terrorism and banditry is a collective effort, and the support of the community is crucial in making Taraba and its surroundings safe for all,” he added.
This operation underscores the Nigerian Army’s determination to eradicate criminality from the region, sending a strong signal to bandits that their reign of terror is nearing its end.
