In an inspiring display of humility and selflessness, Mr. Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has declined the suggestion to name a magnificent hall at Shanahan College of Nursing Sciences in Nsukka after him, following a generous donation of N20 million to support the institution’s ongoing infrastructural development.
The proposal was put forward by the school’s manager, Rev. Fr. Kelvin Caesar, during the event, where Obi presented the cheque. Caesar informed the audience that the hall being funded entirely by Obi was intended to bear his name as a token of appreciation for his generous contribution. However, in a swift and gracious response, Obi politely rejected the idea, underscoring that he had made similar contributions to over 50 institutions across Nigeria. He expressed that it would be inappropriate to have every structure named after him, as his philanthropic efforts were motivated not by personal recognition but by a deep commitment to creating a better future for Nigerian children.
“I do it to serve humanity,” Obi remarked passionately. “The reason God blesses us with resources is to use them to improve the lives of others, not for self-glorification.” This statement encapsulates his philanthropic philosophy: a drive to serve without seeking the spotlight.
Obi’s dedication to supporting the medical and allied disciplines is unwavering, and he emphasized the critical importance of these sectors in shaping a healthier society. Reflecting on the N20 million donation, Obi revealed that it was part of a commitment made the previous year, and he assured the institution of his continued support in the years ahead. “I will return,” he confidently stated, leaving the school community with renewed hope and encouragement.
Peter Obi’s actions serve as a powerful reminder that true philanthropy is about fostering long-term change, not accumulating accolades. His unwavering commitment to education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation reflects the profound impact one individual can make in transforming lives, one selfless act at a time.
