In a bid to cushion the effects of rising food prices, the Federal Government has commenced the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to civil servants in Sokoto State at a highly subsidized rate. According to a report from Nigerian Stories on its official X handle, each 50kg bag of rice will be sold for ₦40,000, significantly lower than the prevailing market price.
The initiative comes as part of the government’s broader effort to address food security concerns and provide relief to Nigerian workers grappling with economic hardships. The subsidized rice distribution is expected to ease the financial burden on civil servants, ensuring they have access to affordable staple food amid inflationary pressures.
Sources within the government indicate that this program may be extended to other states in the coming weeks as authorities work to mitigate the impact of soaring food prices nationwide. Beneficiaries in Sokoto State have already begun purchasing the rice, with reports of high demand and long queues at designated distribution centers.
Officials have assured that measures are in place to prevent hoarding and resale by middlemen, ensuring that only eligible civil servants benefit from the subsidy. The move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to reducing the cost of living and providing direct support to Nigerian families.
As the distribution progresses, stakeholders will be watching closely to assess its impact and effectiveness in alleviating food-related economic pressures in Sokoto and beyond.
