Renowned human rights activist and former Senator, Shehu Sani, has sounded the alarm over the escalating crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), warning that the country is on the brink of full-scale turmoil.
Taking to his official X handle, Sani lamented the deteriorating security situation as the M23 armed rebels continue their aggressive advance, plunging the resource-rich nation deeper into instability. Comparing the crisis to the devastating conflict in Sudan, he cautioned that the DRC could soon witness a similar humanitarian catastrophe if urgent intervention is not taken.
“Another Sudan-like situation is at hand. Another resource-rich country is in turmoil,” he wrote, urging the African Union (AU) to step up and take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed and suffering.
Sani also issued a stark reminder to nations that take their peace for granted, emphasizing that conflicts often emerge when stability is neglected or mishandled. His statement highlights growing concerns over Africa’s persistent struggles with armed insurgencies, poor governance, and external exploitation of its vast natural resources.
As global attention remains fixated on other geopolitical crises, the worsening situation in the DRC raises pressing questions about the role of African and international bodies in maintaining peace and stability on the continent. Will the AU heed the call and prevent another humanitarian disaster, or will the DRC become yet another cautionary tale of unaddressed conflict spiraling out of control?
