Appointment is Legal, Duly Confirmed by Police Council, Force Headquarters Declares
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has categorically dismissed as false and misleading the claims made by activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, regarding the legitimacy of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun’s tenure. In a strongly worded statement released on its official X handle, the police debunked Sowore’s assertions, describing them as an attempt to undermine public confidence in the leadership of the force.
According to the press release signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the appointment of IGP Egbetokun is firmly rooted in the law and was properly ratified by all relevant authorities, including the Police Council and the Presidency.
Legal Basis for IGP Egbetokun’s Appointment
The NPF emphasized that IGP Egbetokun’s appointment is fully backed by law, specifically citing PART III, Section 7(6) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended), which explicitly states:
> “The person appointed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police shall hold office for four years.”
Furthermore, the force referenced Section 8A of the recently amended Police Act, which states that any person appointed as IGP shall serve the full term stated in their appointment letter. This amendment was designed to enhance stability, continuity, and long-term strategic planning within the force, ensuring that the IGP executes policies effectively without fear of sudden removal.
The police accused Sowore of spreading falsehoods aimed at misleading the public and eroding trust in Nigeria’s law enforcement institutions. The statement warned that the circulation of inaccurate information—especially concerning the leadership of the police—could endanger national security by creating unnecessary panic and confusion.
> “Dissemination of misleading claims about the IGP’s tenure is not only irresponsible but also a deliberate attempt to sow discord and destabilize our security apparatus,” the statement read.
The force urged Nigerians to be wary of such narratives and instead engage in constructive discussions that promote national security and development.
In conclusion, the Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to upholding law and order, assuring citizens that the leadership of IGP Egbetokun remains lawful, stable, and focused on protecting lives and property. It also cautioned against politically motivated disinformation, urging Nigerians to rely on verified sources for information concerning law enforcement matters.
> “We urge all well-meaning Nigerians to disregard baseless allegations and support the collective mission of ensuring peace, security, and justice across the nation.”
With this latest rebuttal, the Nigeria Police Force has made it clear that IGP Egbetokun’s position is not in question, and any contrary claims are nothing more than political propaganda.
