In a long-awaited tribute to a national hero, the Federal Government has officially donated ₦30 million to the family of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the visionary designer of Nigeria’s national flag. This gesture, coming nearly two years after his passing, reinforces the government’s recognition of his enduring legacy.
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, accompanied by the Oyo State NOA Director, Olukemi Afolayan, personally presented the cheque to Akinkunmi’s family at their residence in Elebu, Ibadan, on Thursday.
Akinkunmi, a revered patriot, passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 87. Following his death, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dispatched a high-powered delegation, led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, on September 4, 2023, to pay respects and promise a state burial alongside financial support for his family.
Speaking at the presentation, Issa-Onilu emphasized that the ₦30 million was not a payment for Akinkunmi’s services but a token of appreciation for his invaluable contributions to the nation.
“This donation is not to pay for the services of the late legend but to support his family in appreciation of his selfless service to Nigeria,” the NOA DG stated.
In response, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, son of the deceased, expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu and the government for fulfilling their promise.
The gesture underscores the importance of recognizing and honoring national figures whose legacies continue to shape Nigeria’s identity. However, many Nigerians believe such acts of appreciation should come while heroes are alive, ensuring they witness the nation’s gratitude firsthand.
