A gruesome case of jungle justice unfolded in the Otor-Owhe community, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, as enraged youths burned a man alive after he allegedly beheaded a woman. The horrific incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about rising cases of vigilante justice in Nigeria.
According to reports from SaharaReporters, the suspect, identified as Oghenero, allegedly decapitated the woman in a fit of rage after she had reportedly slapped his mother during an argument.
A local source, who witnessed the unfolding chaos, narrated the chilling sequence of events:
“The deceased woman, who hailed from Emevor and Orogun, allegedly had a confrontation with Oghenero’s mother, during which she slapped her. Upon hearing this, Oghenero, driven by fury, tracked the woman down to a bush where she was farming and beheaded her. He then placed her severed head in a polythene bag and took it home.”
However, Oghenero’s return with the severed head sparked immediate outrage in the community. Members of the local vigilante group swiftly apprehended him, shooting him in the legs as he attempted to escape. Before law enforcement could intervene, an angry mob took matters into their own hands—dragging him through the streets before setting him ablaze.
As of the time of this report, the Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, had yet to respond to calls or messages regarding the incident.
The shocking event underscores the deep-seated culture of mob justice in Nigeria, where communities often take the law into their own hands due to distrust in law enforcement. While the crime committed by Oghenero was heinous, his gruesome execution raises pressing questions about lawlessness and the need for a strengthened justice system to prevent such extrajudicial killings.
