Odinkalu Calls Out Buhari: “Stop Lying About Your Wealth; You’re No Longer Campaigning”

Human rights lawyer and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has criticized Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, for his recent claims regarding the source of his family’s income. Buhari, in an address to the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus in Katsina State, had stated that his family now depends on rental income from one of his two houses in Kaduna for sustenance.

In his remarks, Buhari emphasized that he did not corruptly enrich himself during his presidency, asserting, “I left office without any illegally acquired wealth.” He added that his tenure as Nigeria’s leader highlighted the complexities of governing a diverse and challenging nation, stating, “Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware of the administrative hurdles involved. Until you find yourself in a leadership position, you may not understand the complexities.”

Speaking further in Hausa, the former president noted, “I look much better and healthier now than when I was president. People who see me now acknowledge this. After serving as a civil president for eight years, I only have three houses—one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I’ve given one out for rent, which is where I get money for feeding.”

Buhari’s comments appeared aimed at reinforcing his claim of financial prudence and simplicity during and after his administration. However, they have sparked widespread debate and skepticism, with many questioning the authenticity of his narrative.

Reacting to Buhari’s statements, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu took to his official X handle to express his disapproval, accusing the former president of distorting the truth about his financial status. Odinkalu did not hold back, stating, “Someone should please tell Muhammadu Buhari that he is no longer running for the office of Messiah, therefore, no longer has any need to keep lying about his earthly acquisitions.”

The human rights lawyer’s criticism highlights the growing scrutiny surrounding Buhari’s claims of financial modesty. Critics argue that Buhari’s tenure was marred by allegations of widespread corruption within his administration, and such statements appear to downplay the realities faced by many Nigerians during his presidency.

The former president’s remarks come at a time when public trust in Nigeria’s political elite is at an all-time low, with citizens increasingly demanding transparency and accountability. Odinkalu’s fiery response is a reminder that public figures, even after leaving office, remain under the watchful eyes of the public and must maintain honesty in their narratives.

Buhari’s statement was delivered during a meeting ahead of the local council elections scheduled for February 15, where he also addressed issues of leadership and governance in Nigeria. While he attempted to portray himself as a man of modest means, the reaction from Odinkalu and others underscores the persistent doubts about the integrity of Nigeria’s political class.

As debates around his comments continue to swirl, one thing is certain: the legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, and the veracity of his claims, will remain a contentious topic in the public sphere for years to come.
