Nigerian Troops Foil Arms Smuggling Operation From Niger Republic to Terrorists in Zamfara

In a significant victory against terrorism, Nigerian troops from the 1 Brigade under Operation FANSAN YANMA, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have intercepted a major arms shipment intended for terrorist groups operating in Zamfara State. The operation, conducted between January 26 and 27, was based on credible intelligence about arms traffickers linked to Niger Republic.

The covert mission led the troops to the Kaura Namoda-Zurmi Road, where they tracked the suspects’ movements. Sensing they were being pursued, the suspects attempted to evade capture by diverting their vehicle into a bushy area. However, after a brief exchange of fire, they abandoned their vehicle and fled the scene, leaving behind a deadly cache of weapons.

Arms Cache Uncovered

The intercepted vehicle revealed an alarming arsenal, including:

Two PKT machine guns

Nine AK-47 rifles

Thirteen magazines

171 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition

Nine rounds of PKT ammunition

The operation highlights the escalating challenge of cross-border arms trafficking and the determination of Nigerian security forces to curtail the supply chain feeding terrorist activities.

While the suspects remain at large, the military and DSS are intensifying efforts to apprehend them and dismantle the network facilitating arms trafficking into the region. Counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the development on his verified X account on Tuesday, commending the swift response by security forces.

Makama emphasized the significance of the operation in disrupting the flow of weapons to terrorist groups, urging continued vigilance and cooperation among security agencies to combat the persistent threat.

The interception underscores the critical role of intelligence-driven operations in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. It also raises questions about the porous nature of the country’s borders, which have become conduits for illicit activities, including arms smuggling.

The successful operation sends a strong message to those intent on destabilizing the region. However, it also highlights the urgent need for enhanced border security, international cooperation, and robust community engagement to dismantle the arms trafficking networks fueling terrorism in Nigeria.

As security forces intensify their manhunt for the fleeing suspects, this operation serves as a reminder of the dedication and sacrifices of Nigeria’s armed forces in their relentless pursuit of peace and stability.
