“2027 Elections: Peter Obi Rejects Power-Grab Coalition, Advocates for a Better Nigeria”

In a powerful and principled stance, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has unequivocally stated that he is not interested in joining any political coalition aimed solely at seizing power from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking at a two-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria held in Abuja on Monday, the former Governor of Anambra State emphasized that his focus is on rebuilding Nigeria and addressing the nation’s challenges, rather than participating in political power tussles.

“For me, what matters most is Nigeria. Whether we are talking about a coalition or anything else, let’s talk about the future of our country,” Obi said. “Too often, we abandon critical issues and focus on power grabs. That’s not what I’m about.”

He went on to underscore the pressing need to prioritize issues that directly affect Nigerians, highlighting security, education, and the well-being of the common citizen as the nation’s top priorities.

“I’m not interested in any coalition for the purpose of taking power,” Obi reiterated. “It is about discussing Nigeria—how we can secure our people, care for the common Nigerian, and ensure that our children stay in school. That should be our focus now.”

The Labour Party stalwart also called for an urgent overhaul of the Nigerian political system, criticizing the rampant financial inducement and systemic corruption that undermine democratic processes.

“We must put an end to the financial inducement that drives elections and the culture of stealing public funds,” he asserted. “When politicians steal public money to fund elections, they not only buy power but also gain immunity from prosecution. This vicious cycle is destroying Nigeria. We must stop it if we are serious about building a better nation.”

Peter Obi’s remarks come as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections amid growing calls for reforms to strengthen democracy, promote transparency, and ensure that the interests of Nigerians take center stage. His vision resonates with a broad spectrum of citizens who yearn for a government that prioritizes their needs over political ambition.

As debates around coalitions and alliances heat up, Obi’s clear focus on values, accountability, and the future of Nigeria sets a tone for what he describes as “the real conversation”—one about building a nation that works for everyone, not just the political elite.

With his emphasis on transformative leadership and integrity, Obi continues to position himself as a voice for progressive change in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
