“Restoring Hope: Shettima Vows to Combat Corruption, Rebuild Economy, and Strengthen Nigeria’s Democracy”

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has reiterated the commitment of the current administration to addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including economic weaknesses, insecurity, corruption, and national cohesion, while ensuring the independence of democratic institutions.

Speaking at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, held in Abuja on Monday, Shettima, represented by his Special Adviser on Political Issues, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, underscored the administration’s determination to deliver on its promises. Themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathways to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” the event was organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development.

Acknowledging the imperfections of democracy, Shettima emphasized its enduring superiority over other forms of governance. He assured Nigerians of the administration’s awareness of the nation’s challenges and the resolve to tackle them head-on.

> “I would like to assure Nigerians that our administration is acutely aware of many concerns over our direction and goals, particularly given the difficulties which some of our policies inevitably generate. We are involved in correcting many defects in our economy and approaches to securing the citizens,” he stated.

He noted that the journey towards transforming the country from its troubled past to a brighter future would not be without sacrifices, but the government remains committed to reducing the burdens on citizens while staying focused on its objectives.

> “We have been honest in admitting that this transition from a broken past to a promising future will not be without a price. However, we will remain focused on easing the pain and ensuring that we do not take our eyes off the goals. We will listen and adjust where necessary, and we will account for our stewardship as demanded by our challenging democratic system,” he added.

The Vice-President expressed confidence in Nigeria’s potential to reclaim its place as a leading nation on the global stage, driven by a reinvigorated commitment to democratic principles and youth engagement.

> “I am convinced that Nigeria shall rise again, realize its full potential, and lead the way to a future shaped by lessons from our difficult past. In this future, our country will be a key player, and our young people will emerge as active champions of a democratic system that resonates with their aspirations.”

Shettima reaffirmed the administration’s focus on delivering tangible evidence of the benefits of democracy through robust economic policies, bolstering security, combating corruption, ensuring free and fair elections, supporting judicial independence, and fostering national unity.

> “Democracy is not without its flaws, but it remains the most effective system of governance. Our administration is committed to addressing major weaknesses in our economy, protecting our communities, and strengthening the elements that constitute a resilient democratic system. This includes ensuring justice, fairness, and transparency,” he said.

Shettima concluded by appealing to Nigerians to support the administration in its mission to rebuild the nation.

> “We are on a challenging but ultimately rewarding journey. I urge all Nigerians to join us in shaping a Nigeria that upholds the principles of good governance, accountability, and inclusivity.”

The Vice-President’s address underscores the administration’s commitment to advancing democratic ideals while addressing the core issues facing the nation. As Nigeria navigates its path forward, the government aims to inspire confidence and unity among its citizens in the quest for a more prosperous future.
