PDP Crisis Deepens: Wike and Bala Mohammed’s Feud Threatens February NEC Meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is once again at a crossroads as its February 29 National Executive Council (NEC) meeting hangs in the balance. Despite efforts to mend the cracks within the party, lingering disputes among its key stakeholders have left the party navigating treacherous waters, with no resolution in sight.

The NEC meeting, a platform traditionally aimed at addressing pressing issues, is set to confront a growing storm fueled by the unrelenting feud between the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State. This clash has not only escalated tensions within the party but also cast a shadow over its ability to move forward united.

At the center of the discord is Wike’s sharp criticism of Governor Mohammed’s opposition to President Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, which sparked a fierce exchange of words. In a statement released by his media adviser, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed labeled Wike as a “transactional politician” whose actions prioritize personal ambition over party loyalty, principles, and collective interests.

“Wike’s recent media outburst is yet another reminder of his approach to politics—one that thrives on transactions and self-interest rather than genuine service to the people or commitment to party ideals,” Gidado stated. He further described Wike as a “liability” not only to the PDP but also to the Tinubu administration.

The war of words between the two heavyweights has left the PDP fractured, with many questioning whether the NEC meeting can provide the healing the party desperately needs. What was expected to be a platform for addressing internal strife is now poised to be overshadowed by unresolved hostilities and competing interests.

The stakes are higher than ever for the PDP, as every step taken towards reconciliation seems to plunge the party deeper into disarray. With no clear resolution in sight, the February NEC meeting may very well become a stage for further division rather than unity.

As the PDP wrestles with its internal battles, the question remains: can the party rise above these crises to regain its footing as a formidable opposition force, or will its internal divisions spell its downfall? Only time will tell if the party can weather this storm or succumb to the quicksand of its internal discord.
