Tensions have flared between Brazil and the United States after U.S. authorities deported 88 Brazilian migrants in handcuffs, a move Brazilian officials have described as a “blatant disrespect” for their citizens’ rights. The migrants arrived in Manaus, an Amazonian city, on Friday after their deportation flight made an unscheduled landing due to technical issues. According to a government statement released on Saturday, the flight carried 88 deportees, 16 U.S. security agents, and eight crew members. Initially bound for Belo Horizonte in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, the plane diverted to Manaus, where Brazilian authorities intervened.
Outrage Over Handcuffs
A prominent minister in President Lula’s administration denounced the use of handcuffs as unnecessary and dehumanizing, calling it an affront to the dignity of Brazilian citizens. “This is a blatant disrespect for the fundamental rights of our people,” the official stated, urging U.S. authorities to adopt more humane deportation practices.
Following the intervention by Brazilian police, the handcuffs were removed, and the deportees were provided with assistance. In a swift response, President Lula directed that the deportees be transported to their final destination aboard a Brazilian Air Force plane. According to the Justice Ministry, this measure was taken to ensure the migrants completed their journey with “dignity and safety.”
The deportation marks the second time this year that undocumented Brazilian migrants have been flown back from the U.S. However, this incident is particularly significant as it coincides with the beginning of President Donald Trump’s administration.
