In a surprising political development, a constitutional amendment has been introduced in the United States to allow former President Donald Trump to serve a third term. The proposal, unveiled by Representative Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) on Thursday, seeks to amend the 22nd Amendment, which currently limits U.S. presidents to two terms.
The proposed amendment boldly reads: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
Ogles, a strong supporter of Trump, justified the push for the amendment, arguing that the former president’s leadership is essential for the nation’s recovery. “President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years. He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness. He must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”
During a recent gathering with House GOP lawmakers, Trump, known for his bold statements, humorously teased the idea of running for a third term, quipping, “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something.” He continued with a grin, “Unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”
Despite Trump’s playful comments, many House Republicans, including Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), quickly dismissed the remarks, calling them “a joke” and clarifying that Trump had no serious intention of pursuing an extended presidency.
Earlier, Trump had made it clear in an interview with Time magazine that he had no interest in challenging the two-term limit, stating, “I wouldn’t be in favour of a challenge. Not for me. I intend to serve four years and do a great job. And I want to bring our country back. I want to put it back on the right track.”
However, Ogles, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, emphasized Trump’s recent executive actions, which he believes have already started to undo the policies of the Biden administration. “In just a few short days, President Trump has already taken action to undo the catastrophic policies of the Biden Administration and put the United States back on the path to strength and prosperity,” Ogles said, underscoring the urgency of Trump’s return to office.
The proposed amendment, which has generated intense debate, marks a new chapter in the ongoing political saga of Trump’s influence in American politics. Whether it will gain traction among lawmakers remains to be seen, but Ogles’ proposal has sparked a fresh wave of conversations about the future direction of the U.S. presidency and Trump’s legacy.
