Shock in Imo State: Police Arrest Businesswoman for Allegedly Assaulting 13-Year-Old House Help

The Imo State Police Command has apprehended a 35-year-old businesswoman, Edith Nwachukwu, over the brutal treatment of her 13-year-old house help, Kelechi Ejieke.

The arrest, which has sparked outrage among citizens, followed reports of persistent physical abuse inflicted on the young girl. Nigerian Stories, a prominent news platform, broke the news on its official X handle, describing the incident as a chilling example of domestic violence against minors.

According to preliminary investigations, Edith Nwachukwu, a prominent trader in Owerri, subjected her house help to severe beatings, leaving visible injuries and scars on the teenager’s body. Concerned neighbors, who could no longer bear the girl’s cries for help, tipped off the police, leading to her rescue.

Kelechi Ejieke, a vulnerable young girl entrusted to Nwachukwu’s care, is now receiving medical attention. Authorities have described her condition as stable but emphasized the need for psychological support to help her recover from the trauma.

The Imo State Police Command spokesperson confirmed Nwachukwu’s arrest and stated that an investigation is ongoing to ensure justice is served. “This is a clear case of child abuse, and we are committed to holding the perpetrator accountable,” the spokesperson said.

This case highlights the growing concern over the exploitation and mistreatment of domestic workers, particularly minors, in Nigeria. Advocacy groups have called for stricter enforcement of child protection laws and public sensitization to end such abuses.

The arrest of Edith Nwachukwu has reignited discussions about the responsibilities of caregivers and the need for societal vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable individuals. Citizens are urged to report similar cases of abuse to the appropriate authorities without hesitation.

As the investigation unfolds, the public awaits justice for young Kelechi, whose story serves as a stark reminder of the need to protect the rights of every child in Nigeria.
