SERAP Vows Legal Action Against Tinubu Administration and Telcos Over 50% Tariff Hike

In a bold move to challenge the recent hike in telecom tariffs, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued an ultimatum to the Tinubu administration and telecommunications companies. Taking to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, SERAP declared that the government and telcos must “immediately reverse the unlawful increase in call and data costs.”

Describing the 50% tariff hike as unjustifiable and a burden on Nigerians already grappling with economic hardships, SERAP emphasized its commitment to protecting the rights of citizens. The organization stated unequivocally that if the increase is not reversed within 48 hours, it would take legal action to seek redress.

“The Tinubu administration and telcos must immediately reverse the unlawful increase in calls and data costs. We’ll see in court if the 50% tariff hike is not reversed within 48 hours,” SERAP posted, signaling its readiness to escalate the matter judicially.

The sudden hike in telecom tariffs has sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians, many of whom consider the move as an affront to their economic well-being amidst rising inflation and dwindling purchasing power. Critics argue that the government should be prioritizing initiatives to alleviate poverty rather than endorsing policies that deepen financial strain on citizens

SERAP’s call to action underscores the organization’s unwavering stance against policies it perceives as oppressive. Known for its advocacy for transparency, accountability, and human rights, the organization has frequently held successive administrations accountable through legal battles.

The ultimatum raises pertinent questions about the justification for the tariff hike and the broader implications of such increases on access to information, communication, and business operations in Nigeria.

As the 48-hour deadline looms, all eyes are on the Tinubu administration and telecom operators. Will they heed SERAP’s demand, or will the courts become the next battleground for this critical fight over Nigerians’ rights and economic justice?

This development is a reminder of the growing clamor for accountability in governance and the pivotal role of civil society organizations in advocating for the rights of ordinary citizens.
