The Rising Sun Foundation Inc. USA, a coalition of Igbo citizens in the United States, has issued a fiery condemnation of the Nigerian government over the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The group, in a powerful statement shared with Sahara Reporters, warned that the entire Igbo nation remains metaphorically “held captive” as long as Kanu remains behind bars.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a prominent voice advocating for Biafran self-determination, was controversially apprehended in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria in June 2021 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Despite several court rulings, including directives for his unconditional release, Kanu has been held in custody at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja for over four years. His prolonged detention has been a rallying point for calls against what many see as the systemic marginalization and oppression of the Igbo people in Nigeria.
The Rising Sun Foundation strongly criticized what it described as the Nigerian government’s selective application of justice. “The continuous detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu highlights the deliberate persecution of the Igbo people,” the group stated, accusing the government of turning a blind eye to court rulings and international directives.
The group also took aim at South-East political leaders, accusing them of prioritizing personal ambition over the collective welfare of the Igbo community. “Our leaders have failed us, aligning themselves with a system that perpetuates our suffering,” the statement read.
For the Rising Sun Foundation, the issue transcends Kanu’s personal plight. His continued detention is symbolic of broader struggles for justice and equity faced by the Igbo people. “Kanu represents the voice of millions crying out against systemic oppression, economic neglect, and political marginalization. His freedom is not just his own—it is the freedom of the Igbo nation,” the group declared.
The organization further emphasized that Kanu’s incarceration is a violation of international laws, citing a directive from the United Nations Human Rights Council calling for his release and compensation for his illegal rendition and detention.
Calling for collective action, the group urged the Igbo people to rise above divisions and confront their challenges with unity and resilience. “Now is the time for the Igbo nation to stand together. Enough of the silence and complacency; we must demand justice for our people,” the group declared. They further urged Nigerians at large to advocate for adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The Rising Sun Foundation’s statement is the latest in a series of appeals for Kanu’s release, which have also come from human rights groups, international bodies, and prominent individuals. Observers note that the Nigerian government’s handling of the case will serve as a litmus test for its commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law.
As the clock ticks on Kanu’s detention, the voices demanding his freedom grow louder, casting a spotlight on a nation grappling with its identity, unity, and justice for all its citizens.
