The Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Alexander Owoeye, has issued a warrant for the arrest of Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, manager to renowned gospel singer Mercy Chinwo. The arrest warrant comes amid allegations of fraud involving $345,000 linked to unauthorized collection of royalties and event earnings.
The court’s decision followed an ex parte motion filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which argued that Onyedikachukwu’s appearance in court was essential to address criminal charges brought against him.
Representing the EFCC, Mrs. Bilikisu Buhari cited Section 35(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution and various provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to justify the issuance of the warrant. Buhari emphasized the manager’s failure to cooperate with ongoing investigations and expressed concerns about his potential evasion of justice.
“We request the court to issue a warrant for his immediate arrest or, alternatively, to allow the EFCC to declare him wanted through a public summons,” Buhari urged the court.
Justice Owoeye, after reviewing the application and affidavit filed by the EFCC, granted the request. The case was adjourned to January 24 for Onyedikachukwu’s arraignment.
According to the affidavit submitted by the EFCC, the matter stems from a petition filed by Mercy Chinwo herself. The gospel artist accused her manager of secretly collecting royalties from her digital platforms and live events without her knowledge or consent. The alleged fraudulent activities reportedly amount to $345,000.
The revelation has sent shockwaves through the gospel music community, where Chinwo is celebrated as a leading figure. The accusations suggest a deep betrayal of trust between the singer and her manager, a relationship that is typically built on mutual respect and transparency.
Sources close to Chinwo revealed that the singer became suspicious after noticing discrepancies in her earnings, prompting her to involve legal and financial experts. Their findings reportedly uncovered substantial mismanagement of funds, leading her to escalate the matter to the EFCC.
The case has sparked widespread discussion on the vulnerability of artists in the entertainment industry to financial exploitation by trusted associates. Legal analysts have commended Chinwo’s decision to pursue justice, noting that her actions could serve as a wake-up call for other creatives to closely monitor their financial dealings.
Meanwhile, the EFCC has vowed to ensure Onyedikachukwu is brought to justice, stating that his evasion of law enforcement will not deter them. If arrested and convicted, the charges could result in severe penalties, including imprisonment.
As the January 24 arraignment date approaches, all eyes remain on the unfolding legal battle, which could set a precedent for addressing financial misconduct in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Mercy Chinwo, known for her powerful voice and inspirational songs, has yet to make a public statement regarding the case but continues to receive overwhelming support from fans and industry peers alike.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability, even in seemingly close professional relationships, as Chinwo seeks to reclaim her hard-earned trust and financial integrity.
