Abuja Police Accused of ‘Kidnapping’ and Extorting N470,000 from Youths at Gunpoint

In a chilling account that underscores growing concerns over police misconduct, two siblings have narrated how officers of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command allegedly abducted and extorted them of N470,000 at gunpoint in Abuja. The shocking incident was brought to light through a report by Sahara Reporters on its official X handle.

The victims recounted how the ordeal unfolded on January 8, 2025, near Kurudu, after Army Estate in Abuja. According to their testimony, they were stopped by armed policemen who claimed to be from the 10/Zone 6 Division. The officers reportedly forced them into a gold-colored Toyota Corolla with tinted windows and subjected them to physical and psychological abuse.

Speaking to Sahara Reporters, one of the victims said, “My brother and I were extorted by the police last Wednesday. They collected N470,000 from us. While we were driving towards Kurudu, after the Army Estate, they stopped us, ordered us out of our car, and bundled us into theirs, which was fully tinted.”

The brothers described how the officers rummaged through their phones but found nothing incriminating. Despite this, they were accused of being internet fraudsters. The victims said they were beaten, humiliated, and coerced into transferring all the money in their accounts to an OPAY account with the number 6114428320, registered under “Sani Musa Enterprises.”

“They accused us of being internet fraudsters even after finding nothing on our phones. They drove us around the city in their car and kept threatening us. At gunpoint, they forced us to transfer everything we had in our accounts,” the victim recounted.

The account paints a harrowing picture of abuse of power and raises urgent questions about the accountability of security agencies. Such incidents of police extortion and intimidation continue to erode public trust in law enforcement and reinforce the demand for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s policing system.

This report has sparked outrage on social media, with Nigerians demanding immediate action from the FCT police command to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to justice. The victims’ narration has also amplified calls for transparency in handling complaints against officers accused of misconduct.

As of now, there has been no official statement from the FCT police command regarding the allegations. However, the public continues to demand accountability and justice for the victims, urging the authorities to curb the alarming trend of police impunity.

This disturbing case once again highlights the need for systemic reforms to address corruption and human rights abuses within the Nigerian Police Force, ensuring that law enforcement truly serves and protects the citizens.
