The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken decisive action against a Chinese supermarket located in Wuse 2, Abuja. In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the agency announced that the supermarket was sealed off for violating food safety and labeling regulations.

NAFDAC’s enforcement team uncovered several infractions during a routine inspection. Among the violations were the sale of expired products and the display of items exclusively labeled in Chinese, without the mandatory English translations required under NAFDAC’s labeling guidelines. This non-compliance poses serious health risks to consumers, as it leaves them unable to understand product content, expiration dates, and potential allergens.
The agency emphasized its commitment to protecting public health, reiterating that any establishment flouting its regulations would face stringent penalties. “Selling expired products is a grave offense that endangers lives, and our mandate is to ensure that only wholesome, safe, and appropriately labeled items are available in the Nigerian market,” NAFDAC stated.
This development serves as a stark reminder to businesses that regulatory compliance is non-negotiable. Consumers are also advised to remain vigilant, check product labels for expiry dates, and report suspicious or non-compliant products to NAFDAC through its official channels.
By cracking down on errant retailers, NAFDAC continues to uphold its mission of safeguarding the health and well-being of Nigerians.
