In a startling revelation, the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has raised concerns over the alarming influx of bandits fleeing military operations in Nigeria’s Northwest to the southern state. Speaking at the 2025 Annual Inter-Faith Service for Workers held in the Agodi area of Ibadan, Governor Makinde detailed the growing security threats and vowed decisive action to safeguard Oyo State residents.
Governor Makinde disclosed that during a recent birthday retreat, bandits had camped shockingly close—less than two kilometers—from where he was lodged, underscoring the severity of the situation.
“The year 2024 was challenging, particularly in terms of safety and security,” the governor stated. “We faced incidents of fire outbreaks, armed robberies, and kidnappings. However, in 2025, we will redouble our efforts to address these issues. During a security briefing this morning, I learned that some bad elements from the North-West are relocating here due to the military heat in their zones. But let me assure you, we will find and deal with them.”
Makinde attributed the surge in bandit relocation to the intensified military onslaught in the Northwest, which has forced these criminal elements to seek refuge in new territories, including Ibadan, the state capital.
His address served not only as a warning but also as a rallying cry for residents and stakeholders to join forces with the government to combat insecurity. “Security is a collective responsibility, and we must work together to protect our communities,” Makinde emphasized.
The governor’s remarks highlight a pressing issue in Nigeria, as the displacement of criminal groups from one region often results in their migration to other areas, posing new challenges for state and local authorities.
Makinde’s administration has pledged to intensify security measures, leveraging intelligence, community engagement, and collaboration with federal forces to tackle the threat.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the Oyo State government to see how it navigates this complex security challenge while ensuring the safety of its citizens.
