Renowned security analyst and counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama has revealed the grim details of an early morning ambush carried out by suspected members of Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), also known as Lukurawa extremists. The deadly attack occurred on January 3 at a police checkpoint in Garin Natshini Gada, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, claiming the lives of two police officers and escalating security concerns in the region.
According to intelligence sources, the attackers, reportedly riding motorbikes, descended on the checkpoint in a swift and brutal operation. The overwhelmed police personnel stationed there were unable to repel the onslaught, resulting in the loss of two officers. The extremists seized two AK-47 rifles, along with other tactical items, before fleeing the scene.
Adding to the chaos, the assailants rustled a significant number of cattle during the attack, leaving local communities further destabilized. A police patrol vehicle was abandoned at the site, underscoring the ferocity of the ambush.
In the aftermath, troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Argungu, supported by reinforcements from Augie, swiftly mobilized to the affected area, approximately 10 kilometers from Argungu town. Despite their rapid deployment, the attackers had already withdrawn along well-known escape routes, eluding immediate capture.
Local sources provided critical intelligence to the military, identifying the attackers’ retreat paths. Security forces have since launched an exploitation operation, scouring the terrain in pursuit of the perpetrators. The area is now under heavy military domination, with efforts to recover the stolen cattle and apprehend the extremists in full swing.
The fallen police officers have been evacuated to the morgue, their sacrifice a stark reminder of the escalating challenges faced by security personnel in the fight against extremism. The attack has left the Argungu community shaken, as residents grapple with the dual threats of extremist violence and livestock theft.
