Peter Obi Decries IGP’s Directive on Palliatives Distribution: Calls for Compassion Over Bureaucracy

The former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, His Excellency Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the recent directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), which imposes restrictions on the distribution of palliatives to the less privileged. Taking to his official X handle, Obi described the directive as “disturbing,” expressing fears over its potential to hinder acts of compassion amidst the prevailing economic hardship in Nigeria.

While acknowledging that the directive is a response to tragic incidents linked to uncoordinated palliative distribution across the country, Obi cautioned that it is open to abuse and could discourage well-meaning citizens from extending much-needed help to the hungry and distressed.

In his statement, Obi emphasized the delicate balance between public safety and the need to preserve the spirit of generosity among Nigerians. “While I understand the need for better organization and more attention to public safety, it is important to clarify that acts of goodwill should not be hindered by excessive bureaucracy,” he wrote.

He urged the government to focus on promoting collaboration and coordination rather than creating barriers that deter humanitarian efforts. Obi argued that at a time of widespread hunger, pain, and anger, the government should encourage structured compassion, not stifle it with rigid policies.

“This is not the time to stifle the spirit of compassion and generosity among our people,” he stated. “Instead, let us channel these efforts constructively, ensuring that help reaches the most vulnerable safely and efficiently.”

Obi also seized the opportunity to challenge the government on its failure to address the root causes of the ongoing hardship. He criticized policies that have exacerbated the suffering of Nigerians, urging authorities to provide sustainable solutions instead of complicating relief efforts by ordinary citizens.

In a direct appeal to the IGP, Obi called for an immediate review of the directive to foster collaboration rather than division. He advocated for a police force that supports acts of goodwill, ensuring safety without discouraging the altruism needed to alleviate the plight of struggling Nigerians.

“As a nation, we must not let red tape choke the goodwill of our citizens. We need to work together to heal the wounds caused by insensitive policies and economic mismanagement. This is a shared quest to alleviate the suffering of our people,” Obi concluded.

Peter Obi’s impassioned plea has once again brought to light the growing discontent among Nigerians over policies seen as insensitive to their plight, with many looking to the government for clarity and action in this critical time.
