In a deeply moving and heartfelt message, Nigeria’s former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Wazirin Adamawa, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of young lives at a holiday funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State. Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the statesman lamented the devastating news that has left nearly three dozen families in mourning.
“How do we tell nearly three dozen parents and wards that the children they saw off with excitement to a holiday funfair in Ibadan will not be returning home, not even late for Christmas?” Atiku wrote. “I am heartbroken, like millions of our citizens, over the tragedy that befell children who only wanted to have some fun after the rigours of the school term had come to an end.”
The incident, which has cast a somber shadow over the festive season, claimed the lives of children who had merely sought joy and relaxation. It has left countless families grappling with unimaginable grief, their hopes and dreams for their children cruelly cut short.
In his statement, Atiku extended his thoughts and prayers to the bereaved families, likening the loss of their children to “beautiful flowers plucked so early in the day.” He also prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the tragedy and conveyed his deepest condolences to the government and people of Oyo State.
“I pray that Almighty God provides comfort to all affected families and friends and heals the injured. My deepest condolences also go to the government and people of Oyo State. May the beautiful souls of the deceased rest in peace,” he concluded.
The tragedy has sparked a wave of grief and solidarity across Nigeria, with citizens and leaders calling for improved safety standards at recreational facilities to prevent future occurrences. As the nation mourns this heart-wrenching loss, Atiku’s poignant words serve as a reminder of the fragility of life and the need for collective action to protect the most vulnerable among us.
This somber event underscores the urgent need for thorough investigations and accountability to ensure such a devastating incident never happens again. While the nation grieves, the hope remains that these precious lives, though lost too soon, will inspire a renewed commitment to safety, care, and compassion for all Nigerians.
