In a tale that blurs the line between myth and reality, Machina Emirate in Yobe State, Northeastern Nigeria, stands out as a unique cultural phenomenon. Known as the “Northern City of Snakes,” this remote town, about 300 kilometers north of Damaturu, the state capital, boasts a remarkable relationship between humans and serpents—one steeped in history, myth, and royal connections.
Unlike the conventional animosity often portrayed between humans and snakes, Machina tells a different story. Here, snakes are not feared but revered as kin and even as royalty. This peculiar bond stems from an ancient legend that continues to define the emirate’s cultural identity.
According to Machina’s oral tradition, centuries ago, a queen gave birth to twins in the royal palace. But this was no ordinary birth—one of the twins was human, and the other was a snake. Unable to stay within the palace walls, the snake twin found refuge in the rocky terrain behind the emir’s palace. There, it is said, the snake twin’s lineage began, evolving into a parallel royal dynasty of serpents.
To this day, the snakes are regarded as direct descendants of the Machina royal family, believed to carry royal blood in their veins. The tradition holds that these serpentine royals pay homage to the Mai Machinama, the Emir of Machina, and their ancestral home, much like their human counterparts.
“Since then, their lineage has continued, just like human beings,” explained His Royal Highness, Dr. Bashir Albishir Bukar, the current Mai Machinama. “I am the 77th Mai Machinama, so there must be one snake that has attained the same position in their kingdom.”
The snakes of Machina are not seen as pests or threats but as members of the royal family, treated with dignity and respect. It is believed that just as human kings, queens, and princes have ruled over Machina, the snake lineage has also produced its kings, queens, and princesses in a parallel yet harmonious kingdom within the rocks.
As one of the oldest emirates in Yobe State, Machina boasts a rich cultural heritage, blending ancient traditions with a reverence for the mystical. The emirate’s unique relationship with snakes is not just a myth but a living tradition that shapes its identity.
