“Emir Sanusi Declares: ‘I Told My Daughters to Retaliate Against Domestic Violence'”

In a bold and unwavering stance against domestic violence, Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, has revealed that he instructed his daughters to defend themselves if ever subjected to physical abuse by their spouses. This declaration underscores his progressive views on gender equality and the fight against domestic violence within the framework of Islamic teachings.

Sanusi made this striking statement on Monday at the National Dialogue Conference on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), held at Bayero University, Kano. The conference, themed “Islamic Teachings and Community Collaboration for Ending Gender-Based Violence,” was jointly organized by the Centre for Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue (CICID) and the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), with support from the Ford Foundation.

The former Emir emphasized that Islam unequivocally condemns violence against women and advocates for the protection of their rights. “As Muslims, we must rise above cultural practices that condone abuse and embrace the true teachings of Islam, which promote justice, fairness, and compassion,” he stated.

Drawing from personal conviction, Sanusi highlighted the importance of empowering women to stand against oppression. “I have told my daughters that if their husbands ever raise a hand against them, they must retaliate. No man has the right to harm his wife under any pretext,” he declared, eliciting applause from attendees.

The event brought together prominent Islamic scholars, civil society organizations, and government officials to discuss actionable strategies for combating gender-based violence. Participants delved into the role of Islamic jurisprudence in addressing GBV and fostering a culture of accountability within communities.

Sanusi, a renowned advocate for social reform, has consistently used his platform to challenge harmful societal norms, including child marriage, gender inequality, and domestic violence. His latest remarks signal a continued commitment to championing the rights of women and promoting a progressive interpretation of Islamic principles.

The conference concluded with a call to action for community leaders, religious authorities, and policymakers to strengthen collaboration in eradicating gender-based violence. Sanusi’s words serve as a reminder that the fight for justice and equality requires courage, education, and an unwavering resolve to protect the vulnerable.

With his impassioned advocacy, the former Emir of Kano has once again positioned himself as a leading voice in the movement to end domestic violence and uphold the dignity of women within Islamic and cultural contexts.
