A harrowing incident unfolded on Thursday along the Kente Road in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, as armed gunmen launched an attack on the family of Governor Agbu Kefas. The assailants targeted the governor’s mother, Mrs. Jumai Kefas, and his sister, Atsi Kefas, in what is believed to be a planned ambush.
Renowned security analyst and counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, broke the news on his official X handle, detailing the tragic events. According to intelligence reports shared by Makama, the attack escalated when a police officer assigned to escort the family accidentally shot Atsi Kefas while trying to repel the attackers.
The incident occurred in a region that has recently witnessed a surge in bandit activities, raising further concerns about security lapses. As the assailants struck, the escort team reportedly engaged in a fierce exchange of gunfire to protect the governor’s family.
Swift intervention by military troops averted a greater tragedy, with the victims quickly evacuated to safety via an air ambulance. While Mrs. Jumai Kefas escaped unhurt, Atsi Kefas sustained injuries from the accidental gunfire and was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention. Her condition remains undisclosed as of the time of filing this report.
Security forces later recovered the family’s vehicle, along with an empty magazine and passengers’ belongings, suggesting the attackers’ intent to loot. Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this brazen attack.
