The 29th of November, 2024, marked a transformative milestone for a group of young men and women who graduated from the Youths and Women’s Development Association for Social Transformation (YOWDAST) skills acquisition training program. This one-year intensive program, designed to equip participants with practical skills for self-reliance, once again highlighted YOWDAST’s pivotal role in shaping the future of Ganye Chiefdom and beyond.

The graduation ceremony, held at YOWDAST’s office premises along the Federal Government College Ganye Road in Adamawa State, was an unforgettable event. The festive atmosphere was palpable as family members, well-wishers, and community members gathered to celebrate the achievements of the graduates. Distinguished dignitaries, including the Bishop of Bonotem Diocese, Bishop Solomon Nuhu, and a representative of His Royal Highness, the Gangwari of Ganye, graced the occasion, underscoring the significance of YOWDAST’s mission.

Over the years, YOWDAST has emerged as a trailblazer in empowering youth and women across the North-East region of Nigeria. Its Open Apprenticeship Scheme has become a beacon of hope, providing skills that empower beneficiaries to overcome the challenges of unemployment and poverty. By nurturing self-reliance, YOWDAST not only reduces unemployment but also curtails the rising tide of crime, making it an indispensable partner in societal development.
In his powerful and intellectually stimulating address, YOWDAST’s General Secretary, Hon. Matthias Titus Tola, called on society to confront the “tormentor” of redundancy.

“Unemployment and poverty are twin adversaries that threaten the stability and progress of our society,” Hon. Tola declared. “We cannot rely solely on the government to address these challenges. Non-governmental organizations like YOWDAST must rise to the occasion, bridging gaps and creating opportunities where none exist. Through our Open Apprenticeship Scheme, we are not just training; we are transforming lives, instilling hope, and building a generation of self-reliant individuals.”

He passionately appealed for financial and material support from philanthropists, organizations, and the government to sustain and expand YOWDAST’s impact. “The progress we celebrate today is the result of genuine sacrifices by selfless individuals. To take this vision further, we need collective support—because when you empower a youth, you empower a nation,” he emphasized.
The testimonies from the graduates were heartfelt and inspiring. They expressed gratitude to YOWDAST for its unwavering commitment to empowering the less privileged. One graduate, brimming with confidence, said, “YOWDAST has not only taught us skills but also instilled in us a sense of responsibility to contribute positively to our communities. This organization is a shining example of what selflessness and vision can achieve.”

For over three decades, YOWDAST has stood as a pillar of hope, transforming the lives of thousands. Its founders’ dedication and resilience continue to propel the organization forward, cementing its reputation as a leader in skill development and social transformation.
As YOWDAST graduates another batch of skilled apprentices, the importance of sustained support cannot be overemphasized. Organizations like YOWDAST are vital in the fight against unemployment, poverty, and dependency, but they cannot achieve their goals in isolation. Governments, philanthropists, and well-meaning individuals must rally behind such initiatives to ensure their continuity and growth.

YOWDAST’s success story is a testament to the power of community-driven efforts. It serves as a reminder that with the right resources and collective will, the challenges of unemployment and poverty can be surmounted, paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous society.
As the newly graduated apprentices embark on their journeys, YOWDAST continues to set the pace, proving that transformation is not just a dream but an achievable reality.
