ENUGU – In a significant reaffirmation of its commitment to constitutional provisions and regional equity, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has declared that Rivers State will produce the next President General of the group. This announcement aligns with the organization’s longstanding tradition of rotating leadership among member states.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of Ohanaeze has already taken decisive steps to actualize this mandate. It has instructed the Secretary General, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, to convene a meeting of Ime Obi Ohanaeze, the highest decision-making body of the organization, to establish an electoral committee. This committee will oversee the election scheduled for January 2025, ensuring a seamless transition in leadership.
This resolution comes amidst speculation and concerns that the constitutional zoning arrangement might be disrupted. Rising from a critical meeting held in Enugu on Wednesday, Ohanaeze reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the principle of zoning, describing it as a cornerstone of unity and fairness within the organization.
In a statement released by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, the NEC highlighted the urgency of preparing for the forthcoming election. “The NEC reaffirmed its commitment to the provisions of the Ohanaeze constitution, to the effect that it is the turn of Rivers State to produce the next President General for Ohanaeze Ndigbo come January 2025,” the statement read.
To ensure broad-based consensus and inclusivity, the NEC resolved that the Secretary General would work in consultation with Southeast Governors, Igbo Senators, traditional rulers, town unions, clergy, stakeholders, and Ohanaeze structures to convene the meeting of Ime Obi. This body will formally set up an electoral umpire tasked with ensuring transparency and credibility in the election process.
Ohanaeze’s zoning arrangement has long been lauded as a mechanism for fostering unity and inclusion among its diverse member states. By entrusting Rivers State with the mantle of leadership, the organization underscores its dedication to fairness and equity, even as it navigates evolving challenges within the socio-political landscape of Nigeria.
