The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has vehemently refuted claims implicating its personnel in a widely circulated video showing uniformed individuals scooping fuel from an overturned tanker. Taking to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the NPF released a detailed statement categorically disassociating itself from the incident, asserting that the individuals in the video are not officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the press release signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the individuals in the video are uniformed personnel from a neighboring Francophone country, whose camouflage uniforms bear a resemblance to those of the Nigeria Police. A key identifier, the statement noted, is that the individuals were conversing in French, not in any Nigerian language or English, further debunking any association with the NPF.
The statement condemned the viral dissemination of the video, describing it as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force. “The spread of disinformation and unverified content aimed at discrediting the Nigeria Police Force is not only irresponsible but also undermines the integrity of our institution and has far-reaching negative consequences for the nation and its people,” the release emphasized.
Reiterating the force’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the safety of Nigerians, the NPF urged citizens to refrain from sharing unverified information. “We strongly urge Nigerians to exercise caution and verify facts before sharing content. Fostering national unity and upholding the credibility of institutions working tirelessly for public safety should remain a collective responsibility,” the statement added.
The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), reaffirmed its dedication to preserving public trust and ensuring accountability within its ranks. Acts intended to damage the reputation of the police, it warned, would not be tolerated.
The NPF calls on citizens and media outlets to prioritize factual reporting and avoid falling prey to sensational narratives designed to sow discord. The Force remains resolute in its mission to protect lives and property while maintaining the highest ethical standards.
