The renowned security analyst and counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, has made a significant announcement via their official X (formerly Twitter) handle. On November 11, 2024, nine former Boko Haram fighters laid down their arms in Agadez, Niger, in a poignant gesture that highlights ongoing efforts to restore peace in the region.

The official ceremony took place at the Agadez Governorate Court, led by Brigadier General Ibra Boulama and his team, who welcomed the ex-combatants as part of a comprehensive disarmament initiative. The surrendered arsenal included an array of heavy weaponry, with a particularly notable contribution of two 12.7mm machine guns. This handover was facilitated through the efforts of Nigerian mediator Adoua Mohamed, who played a pivotal role in guiding the combatants toward disarmament.
This surrender forms part of a growing trend in the Sahel, where demobilizations are increasingly supported by local and regional mediators. Influential community leaders from Kawar and Termite have actively promoted dialogue, creating channels for former fighters to reintegrate into society. The movement has seen success, with several other ex-combatants disarming earlier this month. This wave of change is largely credited to prominent figures such as Elhadj Mahamat EZEMI, a well-respected businessman from Dirkou, and Ibrahim Moussa Ekadé, who has been instrumental in engaging armed Toubou groups in Libya.
Local leaders underscore that sustainable peace is essential for socio-economic development, noting that a reduction in violence could unlock new opportunities for growth and prosperity across Niger and beyond. They emphasize that these advances depend heavily on discreet diplomacy, persistent outreach, and the collective will of communities and governments alike to foster an environment where peace can flourish.
As these former fighters turn their backs on violence, a glimmer of hope emerges, suggesting that collaborative efforts and grassroots advocacy can indeed make a lasting impact on the region’s security landscape.
