In a significant move towards enhancing the welfare of public sector employees, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf Kabir has declared a landmark increase in the state’s minimum wage. Announcing the decision on his official X handle, Governor Kabir expressed that the new wage aligns with his administration’s commitment to social justice and improving the quality of life for Kano State’s workforce.
“We have approved the sum of N71,000 as the new minimum wage in Kano State,” Kabir shared. “This initiative is a testament to our dedication to uplift the standard of living for our workers and promote equitable standards across the board.” The increase, set to take effect in November, underscores the administration’s proactive stance on supporting state and local government employees amidst rising living costs.
This new minimum wage will expand Kano’s monthly payroll by a substantial N6 billion for state-level employees, with an additional N7 billion allocated for those working within local government councils. The move not only raises standards but demonstrates a strategic investment in human capital across the state.
Further bolstering this commitment to employee welfare, Governor Kabir highlighted recent salary adjustments for Kano’s education sector. Following the promotion of 20,737 teachers, over N340 million has been added to the monthly payroll to accommodate their revised salaries. This increase aims to recognize the dedication of educators across the state and foster a motivating environment for Kano’s teaching professionals.
Governor Kabir extended his gratitude to the state minimum wage implementation committee, lauding its diligent work in bringing this significant change to fruition. “Their efforts have been instrumental in realizing this vision for a fairer and more supportive wage structure,” he added.
The wage adjustment reflects a broader commitment by the Kano State government to ensure equitable compensation that meets the evolving needs of its workforce, setting a new standard for employee welfare in the region.
