In a powerful move to reinforce Nigeria’s food security, the Nigerian Army has declared its unwavering commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s ambitious agricultural policy. Announced through the Army’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, emphasized the Army’s dedication to fostering food security as a pathway to national peace and stability.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, represented by Major General Zakari Abubakar, Chief of Transformation and Innovation, spoke at the inauguration of the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited (NAFARL) 2024 training workshop, held in Abuja on October 22. Themed “Attaining Peace through Food Security: Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited Perspective,” the event highlighted the Nigerian Army’s role as a vital partner in President Tinubu’s vision for a self-sustaining Nigeria.

During his remarks, Maj. Gen. Abubakar underscored the Army’s proactive approach to food security, following a directive from President Tinubu that calls for optimal use of Armed Forces’ land resources for agricultural purposes. The Chief of Army Staff lauded NAFARL’s achievements, describing the organization as a trailblazer in sustainable farming, ranching, and livestock breeding innovations. He praised NAFARL’s success in pioneering advanced research and development in agricultural practices, particularly in breeding superior livestock and cultivating refined farming techniques to boost productivity and resilience.
“Our mission goes beyond defense,” the COAS emphasized. “Through strategic agricultural investments, we aim to transform underutilized military lands into hubs of food production, ensuring both food security and socio-economic stability across Nigeria.”

The workshop provided hands-on training, fostering knowledge exchange among Army personnel on innovative farming methods and sustainable agriculture practices. By spearheading these initiatives, the Nigerian Army is not only supporting national security but also contributing to Nigeria’s agricultural sector, driving economic empowerment, and setting a standard for large-scale, sustainable farming in Africa.
The Nigerian Army’s renewed commitment to this cause reflects a broader mission to harness the Armed Forces’ vast land assets in support of a robust national food supply chain, bolstering both food security and economic progress for future generations.
