In a bold statement reinforcing the fight against corruption, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reiterated the Nigerian Police Force’s unwavering stance on extortion, impunity, and corruption within its ranks. This declaration was made on Wednesday during the commissioning and public unveiling of the Rivers State Police Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) at the command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Speaking at the event, IGP Egbetokun underscored the importance of accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct among police officers, stressing that the Force will not tolerate any form of misconduct. He highlighted the newly established CRU as a critical mechanism for fostering trust between the police and the public, enabling citizens to report any grievances or unlawful behavior by officers.
“The Nigerian Police Force is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity. We will not condone extortion, impunity, or any form of corruption from our officers. This Response Unit is a step towards greater accountability, where the public can directly lodge complaints and expect swift action,” Egbetokun emphasized.
The IGP’s remarks come amid growing public demand for transparency and reform within the police. With the hashtag #NoToImpunity gaining traction on social media, Egbetokun’s call for a zero-tolerance approach to misconduct is seen as a much-needed move to restore public confidence in the Force. The new CRU office is expected to serve as a direct link between the police and the community, ensuring that complaints are addressed promptly and fairly.
The public is urged to utilize the CRU to report any violations, as the Inspector-General assured that the era of unchecked impunity in the Force is over.
