Tinubu’s Federal Executive Council Reshuffles Ministries: Niger Delta, Sports Ministries Scrapped, New Regional Development Ministry Introduced

In a significant shake-up, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has restructured key federal ministries, signalling a new direction for national governance. Announced by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) made a bold decision to dissolve the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development, replacing them with more streamlined bodies.

In place of the Ministry of Niger Delta, the FEC has established the Ministry of Regional Development, tasked with overseeing all regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), North East Development Commission (NEDC), North West Development Commission (NWDC), and South West Development Commission (SWDC). This shift is designed to consolidate efforts and enhance the coordination of regional projects across Nigeria, ensuring equitable development and improved efficiency in resource allocation.

Sports administration in Nigeria also underwent a major transformation, with the FEC approving the dissolution of the Ministry of Sports Development. Its functions will now be absorbed by the National Sports Commission (NSC), a move expected to bolster sports governance and allow for a more focused approach to the development of athletics and other sports nationwide.

In addition to these changes, the FEC has merged the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy. This merger aims to harmonize efforts in promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage while boosting tourism and creative industries, an increasingly important sector in Nigeria’s drive for economic diversification.

The decisions were finalized at the Federal Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, as part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to streamline governance, cut redundancy, and enhance the effectiveness of government ministries in delivering on his administration’s promises of national development and economic growth.

This restructuring signals a shift towards greater efficiency in government operations, as Nigeria continues its journey towards sustainable development under Tinubu’s leadership.
