Defence Headquarters Warns Against Calls for Military Coup, Labels It Treasonable

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a stern and unequivocal warning to individuals and groups advocating for a military takeover in Nigeria, categorizing such actions as treasonable and a direct violation of the Nigerian Constitution.

In a strongly worded statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the DHQ emphasized the military’s unwavering commitment to upholding democracy under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, highlighted the grave consequences of any attempt to undermine the country’s constitutional order.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) remain firmly focused on their constitutional duties, which include protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and ensuring peace and security. Any calls for a military takeover, as seen in recent viral videos, are not only irresponsible but treasonable under the Constitution,” Brigadier General Gusau warned.

He further reiterated the military’s steadfast loyalty to President Tinubu’s leadership, underlining that the AFN is committed to preserving the democratic principles for which countless Nigerians have fought. “We fully support the current administration and are determined to uphold the stability and democratic processes of our nation,” Gusau added.

The statement also lauded President Tinubu’s administration for its continued support of the Armed Forces, noting that this backing has been instrumental in maintaining the relative peace and security currently enjoyed across the country. Gusau assured Nigerians that the military, in collaboration with other security agencies, will remain vigilant and take all necessary measures to thwart any attempts at an unconstitutional takeover.

The DHQ’s message is a clear response to recent controversial calls for military intervention, making it abundantly clear that such sentiments will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law. This firm stance underscores the military’s commitment to preserving Nigeria’s hard-earned democratic gains.

As the nation navigates its challenges, the DHQ’s statement serves as a timely reminder that Nigeria’s Armed Forces are resolutely standing guard over the country’s democratic institutions and are ready to defend its sovereignty against any threats, internal or external.
