Honoring Service: Nigerian Army Pulls Out 15 Retired Generals from Artillery Corps in Grand Ceremony

In a grand and emotional ceremony held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery (NASA) in Kachia, Kaduna State, the Nigerian Army (NA) officially pulled out 15 distinguished retired generals from its Artillery Corps. The ceremony marked the end of an era for these military veterans who have dedicated decades of service to their nation. The group of retirees included 11 Major Generals and 4 Brigadier Generals, all of whom left a legacy of discipline, leadership, and patriotism.

Maj. Gen. James Myam (rtd), who spoke on behalf of the retired officers, delivered a poignant reflection on their military careers, expressing a deep sense of fulfillment. With heartfelt gratitude, he attributed their successful careers to divine grace, acknowledging God’s protection throughout the years. He also took a moment to thank President Bola Tinubu for the privilege of serving the country under his leadership and expressed his appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, praising his leadership and wishing him continued success.

The ceremony served not only as a farewell but also as a moment of reflection. Maj. Gen. Myam recounted the humble beginnings of their military journeys when they first reported to the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna as Officer Cadets. His speech carried a message of loyalty and dedication to the officers still in service, urging them to remain steadfast in upholding the Nigerian Constitution and supporting the democratically elected government. He emphasized the importance of vigilance and security consciousness in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.

The retired general also took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to the families, spouses, friends, instructors, and mentors who stood by them throughout their demanding careers. He acknowledged their invaluable support, noting that their sacrifices were essential to the officers’ success. The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking military figures, both retired and serving, including former Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Alwali Kazir (rtd), whose presence added prestige to the event.

The pulling-out parade was filled with military precision and emotional moments as the generals, once the backbone of Nigeria’s artillery strength, bid farewell to the force that shaped their lives. As they marched out of service, they carried with them the pride of having defended their nation with honor, leaving behind an enduring example for the next generation of officers.

This symbolic send-off underscores the Nigerian Army’s tradition of honoring its veterans while reinforcing the values of loyalty, courage, and selflessness that are deeply rooted in the institution. The event was a powerful reminder of the personal sacrifices made by military officers in the defense of their nation, as well as the enduring bonds formed within the brotherhood of the Nigerian Army.

As these 15 distinguished generals transition into retirement, they leave behind a legacy of excellence and dedication that will continue to inspire both their comrades and the Nigerian Army for years to come.
