Former Vice President and 2023 People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has expressed profound sorrow over the devastating petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The explosion, which claimed multiple lives, marks another tragic chapter in the recurring series of petroleum-related disasters in Nigeria.
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Atiku shared his heartfelt condolences, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the reports of the death of scores of people in the petrol tanker explosion in Majiya, Jigawa State.”
Atiku emphasized the urgency of addressing the alarming frequency of such incidents, stating, “The incident in Jigawa is one too many involving tragic petrol tanker explosions in the country. It is about time we explored other means, like rail, for transporting petroleum products around the country.”
He also underscored the importance of better safety protocols and training for those involved in the transportation of hazardous materials. “It is pertinent to train drivers handling flammable products and review the safety protocols for the transportation of petroleum and other inflammable products,” he added.
In a poignant message, Atiku extended his sympathies to the government and people of Jigawa State, urging swift action to control the situation and provide aid to those affected. “I share my grief with the people and government of Jigawa State and call for an expeditious rescue and control operation. No resource should be spared in treating the injured,” he said.
The former Vice President also expressed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the tragedy, praying for their comfort and for the souls of the deceased to find eternal rest.
Atiku’s statement not only conveys his deep empathy for the victims but also highlights the critical need for systemic reforms in the transportation of petroleum products in Nigeria. His call for safer alternatives and more stringent safety measures reflects a growing demand for change in an industry fraught with preventable accidents.
