It has been five long months since the passing of our representative in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, yet the seat for Ganye Local Government Constituency remains unfilled. According to the by-laws, a vacant seat should be declared and the process for a by-election initiated within 90 days. Despite this clear mandate, the leadership of the House of Assembly has remained silent, leaving the people of Ganye without representation in these critical times.
It is indeed an acceptable fact that, in general practice, when a member dies, the seat may be declared vacant within a few months to allow for due process, and the necessary notifications are sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a by-election.
We, the Ganye Youths Patriotic Front, are compelled to raise our voices and ask: What is keeping the Adamawa State House of Assembly mute on this issue? Why has the leadership failed to declare the seat vacant, as required by law? Other states facing similar situations have already written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and are preparing for by-elections. What is happening in Adamawa State? Why is Ganye being left behind?
The people of Ganye are not only denied representation but also deprived of the opportunity to have a voice in the state’s legislative affairs. At a time when hardship and insecurity are the order of the day, every constituency needs strong leadership to tackle the challenges we face. The absence of our representative further worsens our plight, and we cannot afford to let this continue.
We demand that the leadership of the Adamawa State House of Assembly come out and inform the general public—particularly the people of Ganye—about the reasons for this delay. We will not fold our arms and allow a few individuals to play with our constitutional rights. The people of Ganye deserve to know why, after five months, nothing has been done to restore our voice in the Assembly.
Our constituency is not a second-class constituency. The law is clear, and we demand that it be followed. In these trying times, the people of Ganye need representation more than ever. Our voices must be heard, and our rights must be respected.
The Adamawa State House of Assembly owes it to the people of Ganye to provide clarity and immediate action. We will not remain silent while our democratic rights are being undermined.
Signed:
The Ganye Youths Patriotic Front
