…Cautions Police Against Derailing Democratic Process
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a clarion call to the people of Rivers State, urging them to rise and exercise their constitutional right by voting in the upcoming Local Government Area elections slated for Saturday, October 5, 2024. In a strongly worded statement shared on its official X handle, the party emphasized the importance of voter participation in ensuring the sovereignty of the people is upheld in the face of growing political tension.
The PDP asserts that the control of democratic activities in Rivers State, a critical federating unit, firmly rests with its citizens. It insists that no individual, group, or organization has the power to undermine the people’s right to elect their representatives at the local level. This right, they emphasize, is enshrined in the constitution and cannot be suppressed under any guise.
Highlighting the preparedness of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the party stated that all necessary operational materials are in place to conduct a free and fair election in accordance with the Supreme Court’s ruling. Furthermore, the PDP stressed that under the Electoral Act 2022, no court has the authority to halt an election once the process has begun. Citing Section 84(15) of the Act, the statement reads, “Nothing in this section shall empower the courts to stop the holding of primaries or general elections pending the determination of a suit.”
The PDP condemned what it described as a brazen attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled police to obstruct the electoral process in Rivers State. The party referenced reports of police operatives invading RSIEC facilities in a bid to disrupt the election. It called this an affront to democracy and the rule of law, which was rightfully resisted by the people of Rivers State.
“The APC and the police should be reminded that the people of Rivers State are both peace-loving and law-abiding. However, they will not tolerate any attempt to stifle their democratic rights, especially in electing leaders who will govern at the grassroots level,” the statement declared.
The PDP further called on the Nigerian public and the international community to hold the APC and the Inspector General of Police accountable should there be any breakdown of law and order during the electoral period. They urged the Inspector General to fulfill his constitutional duty to ensure a peaceful and secure environment conducive to the smooth conduct of the elections, regardless of his personal or political affiliations. “Duty calls on him to act professionally in the interest of democracy and the stability of our nation.”
The statement concluded by commending the resilience and determination of the people of Rivers State in defending their democratic rights. The PDP affirmed its support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the citizens of Rivers as they prepare to elect local government representatives in accordance with the law.
