“Senator Shehu Sani Urges Nigerians to Move Beyond Colonial Blame and Embrace Nation-Building”

In a thought-provoking statement, renowned human rights activist and former senator, Shehu Sani, has called on Nigerians to shift their focus from colonial grievances and embrace the task of nation-building. Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sani emphasized the shared history of colonialism across various nations, underscoring that Nigeria is not unique in its origins.

He noted, “The British forcefully brought us together to form what is now called Nigeria. But that was exactly what the French, Portuguese, Belgians, and the Spanish did in other African countries. That was also what colonialists did in the Americas and many Asian states.”

Sani highlighted that countries such as the United States and Canada, also products of British, French, and Spanish colonialism, have managed to rise above their colonial past and harness their diversity to build thriving nations. He urged Nigerians to take a page from their books, rather than remain “stuck in blaming their own ‘Lord Lugards’ or the condition of their birth.”

According to the former senator, the difference between Nigeria and these countries lies not in the histories of forced amalgamation, but in their willingness to confront the complexities of nationhood and focus on building a future together. Despite enduring challenges, they have made strides towards progress, something he believes Nigeria can also achieve if the population collectively commits to it.

Sani’s message serves as a poignant reminder that while the scars of colonialism run deep, progress can only be made through unity, resilience, and forward-thinking leadership. By acknowledging the diversity that colonialism left behind, he suggests, Nigerians have the potential to transform their nation into one of greatness.

His statement resonates with a broader call for Nigerians to channel their energies towards national development rather than being anchored to historical grievances. In a time where Nigeria faces numerous socio-political challenges, Sani’s message carries a powerful reminder of the potential within the country’s diversity.
