Atiku Abubakar Urges Unity and Electoral Reform as Nigeria Marks 64th Independence Anniversary

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Wazirin Adamawa, has taken to his official X handle to convey a message of reflection, resolve, and renewal as Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence anniversary. In his heartfelt post, he extended warm congratulations to all Nigerians, emphasizing that the day is not merely a commemoration but a tribute to the “indomitable spirit and unwavering resolve of Nigerians” who continue to believe in the boundless potential of the country.

Atiku Abubakar acknowledged the numerous tumultuous phases Nigeria has traversed throughout its history, underscoring the nation’s resilience. “The tenacity of our patriotic citizens, bolstered by the solidarity of our international allies, has fortified our resolve as a resilient entity,” he said, highlighting the collective strength of the nation in the face of adversity.

Reflecting on the 64-year journey, Atiku expressed pride in Nigeria’s continued embrace of democratic governance, stating that this anniversary marks the longest period of democratic rule in the country’s history. He celebrated the success of democracy in anchoring Nigeria’s institutions in the principles of the rule of law but cautioned that the country has much to do in terms of political inclusivity and electoral integrity.

“I must emphasize that, while democracy has anchored our institutions in the principles of the rule of law, we have yet to achieve satisfactory progress in fostering political inclusivity and ensuring elections that are genuinely free and fair,” Atiku stated, with an air of both pride and concern.

The former Vice President’s message quickly shifted to a call for national reflection on the state of Nigeria’s democracy. He decried the deterioration of electoral credibility, which he believes is increasingly manipulated by those in power. In his view, the political landscape has become corrosive, with opposition parties weakening and the ruling party exploiting internal processes to render them ineffective. “Nigeria teeters on the brink of a one-party dictatorship,” Atiku warned, emphasizing that the time has come for politicians and statesmen of integrity to unite and reclaim the nation’s democratic foundations from the grip of oppression.

Atiku’s message also invoked the legacy of Nigeria’s founding fathers, who, through peaceful political activism, secured the nation’s independence. He stressed that the current political elite must follow in their footsteps, rallying together to protect democracy from the threats of authoritarianism. “Our founding fathers united under a common cause, championing our independence through peaceful, political activism. What we celebrate today is the fruition of their collective endeavors and those of subsequent generations.”

In his impassioned conclusion, Atiku made a clarion call for unity among political leaders across all party lines. He urged the formation of a “formidable coalition” that would provide Nigerians with a credible opposition, capable of steering the nation back toward the path of true democratic governance. “Let us forge a coalition that will give Nigerians the credible opposition they deserve, and lead our beloved nation towards a brighter, more inclusive future,” he appealed.

The Wazirin Adamawa’s message, while celebratory, stands as a solemn reminder of the work ahead in ensuring that Nigeria’s democracy not only survives but thrives. His words resonate with a sense of urgency, calling for action in safeguarding the nation’s hard-earned democratic freedoms.
