Adamawa State Police Command Cautions Against Violent Protests, Deploys Security for 64th Independence Anniversary

As part of preparations for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations, the Adamawa State Police Command has taken proactive measures to ensure peace and security across the state. In a statement shared via its official X handle, the Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police (CP), cautioned citizens against engaging in any violent protests that could disrupt the peace and endanger lives and property.

On September 30, 2024, the Command convened a crucial meeting with its key stakeholders, aiming to dissuade groups and individuals from participating in any protests that have the potential to spiral into violence. The Command emphasized that while peaceful protests are a democratic right, violent demonstrations often lead to unintended consequences, such as loss of life, destruction of property, and public disorder.

“The planned nationwide protest carries the risk of being hijacked by miscreants, turning it into a violent event,” the statement highlighted. “We must acknowledge this simple truth and take the necessary precautions to avoid such outcomes.”

Recognizing the potential for civil unrest, the Adamawa State Police have deployed additional security personnel throughout the state to safeguard citizens during the Independence celebrations. The CP urged all residents to go about their daily activities without fear, emphasizing that the Command is fully prepared to maintain law and order.

In a further appeal, the CP called on organizers of the planned protests to formally notify the police, enabling the Command to implement adequate security measures. “If the protest must take place, we encourage organizers to liaise with us so that we can provide a security perimeter to prevent miscreants from hijacking their peaceful intentions,” the CP advised.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, also reiterated that the Command is committed to protecting the rights of all citizens, but any protest that threatens public safety will not be tolerated.

The Adamawa State Police Command remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all residents as the nation marks its 64th Independence Anniversary. Citizens are urged to cooperate with the police and avoid any activities that may compromise the peace.
