In a surprising revelation, the Deputy Controller of Kirikiri Prison has provided insight into the special considerations made for Nigerian internet personality, Bobrisky, during his time in custody. In a recent post on Nigerian Stories’ official X handle, the prison official explained that Bobrisky, who is known for his feminine appearance, was not placed in the general cell population for his own safety.
“We couldn’t place Bobrisky in the general cell because of his female features. Had we done so, he would have been in serious danger. The prison is filled with many hardened convicts, including those convicted of sexual offenses such as sodomy and rape,” the Deputy Controller stated.
He went on to elaborate that Kirikiri Prison, notorious for housing some of the most dangerous criminals in Nigeria, has inmates who, due to prolonged incarceration, are often driven by primal urges. “If we had put Bobrisky in with the general population, he could have been attacked or worse, killed overnight,” the official added.
This disclosure has stirred reactions online, with many questioning the broader safety measures for vulnerable inmates in Nigerian prisons. Bobrisky, known for his controversial public persona and open defiance of traditional gender norms, remains a polarizing figure, but his experience highlights a deeper issue regarding the treatment of inmates with unique vulnerabilities in the prison system.
As the conversation grows, questions arise about the state of Nigeria’s correctional facilities and the protection of inmates, especially those who may be at heightened risk due to their gender identity or appearance.
This candid revelation from Kirikiri’s Deputy Controller has opened the door to a broader debate on how Nigerian correctional institutions handle such sensitive cases, underscoring the need for reform and specialized care for vulnerable inmates.
