The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially sounded the clarion call ahead of the much-anticipated #OndoDecides2024, taking to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle to rally support for their candidate, Agboola Ajayi, with the hashtag #AgboolaForSure. With just six weeks remaining until the decisive election, the PDP’s message is clear: it’s time for Ondo State to turn the page on the current administration under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a scathing critique, the PDP highlighted the failures of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s nine-month tenure, accusing his government of squandering unprecedented financial resources without any tangible development to show for it. The current administration, according to the PDP, has had more access to funds than any other Ondo government in the past decade, with an average monthly revenue of N12 billion. Yet, not a single metre of asphalt has been added to the state’s roads, leaving critical infrastructure in a state of neglect.
The PDP further condemned Aiyedatiwa’s handling of the federal government’s palliative measures. Despite receiving trailers of rice intended to alleviate the suffering of Ondo’s citizens, not a single grain has been distributed, sparking outrage and accusations of hoarding.
“Akure, once the pride of Ondo State, has now earned the unfortunate reputation of being the dirtiest state capital in Southwest Nigeria,” the PDP charged, placing the blame squarely on the governor’s shoulders for failing to maintain basic sanitation standards.
In addition to the lack of infrastructural development and poor public welfare management, the PDP accused Aiyedatiwa’s administration of blatant nepotism, pointing to a series of recruitment scams that have defrauded the people of Ondo State. “Citizens paid to apply for jobs that don’t exist, and to this day, none of those recruited have ever resumed work,” the party alleged, questioning the whereabouts of the funds collected for these fraudulent schemes.
The PDP also took aim at the APC government’s erratic policy decisions, accusing it of multiple policy summersaults that have left the state’s development in disarray. While the rest of the nation clamors for cost-cutting measures in governance, Aiyedatiwa’s administration has embarked on what the PDP calls an “appointment bazaar,” inflating government positions and salaries at the expense of the state’s finances.
The party’s post alluded to Aiyedatiwa’s controversial statement that “a year is not enough to govern.” The PDP, however, interpreted this as an admission of intent to “loot the state dry” rather than address the needs of the people.
With just weeks to go before the 2024 gubernatorial elections, the PDP’s message is unambiguous: it’s time for the people of Ondo to reject the APC and embrace a future of hope and progress under Agboola Ajayi.
“Reject APC! Reject Aiyedatiwa! Reject Poverty!” the post concluded, urging the electorate to vote for change in the upcoming polls.
As the election day draws near, the political temperature in Ondo is heating up, with both major parties poised for a fierce battle. The question remains—will Ondo’s citizens heed the call for a new direction, or will the status quo prevail? Only time will tell as the countdown to #OndoDecides2024 continues.
