Tinubu Calls for Stronger Global Unity, Advocates for Africa’s Permanent Seat on UN Security CouncilHighlights Need for Collective Action on Global Issues and Urges Support for Developing Nations

Nigerian Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s message to the international community at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. In a compelling address, President Tinubu called for a renewed commitment to multilateralism and urged world leaders to strengthen ties among United Nations member states to address pressing global challenges.

Key Points from the Address:

Push for Africa’s Permanent Seat on the UN Security Council: Tinubu advocated for the inclusion of Nigeria and other African nations in the UN Security Council, emphasizing the need for a more equitable representation that reflects the diverse realities of the global community.

Call for Collective Action on Global Issues: He highlighted the urgency of tackling existential threats such as hunger, terrorism, climate change, poverty, and hyper-inflation through collective global action, warning that the pursuit of narrow national interests undermines the ability to address these challenges effectively.

Debt Relief and Financial Support for Developing Nations: The President called for a new financial architecture and debt forgiveness to aid developing countries in achieving sustainable growth and stability, stressing that economic development is crucial for global peace and security.

Condemnation of Nationalism and Singular Priorities: Tinubu expressed concern over the growing trend of nationalism, which he believes threatens the United Nations’ core principles of inclusivity, equality, and cooperation. He emphasized that only through unity can the international community overcome shared challenges.

“Global challenges such as terrorism, armed conflict, inequality, and climate change require a united front,” Tinubu stated. “Nationalistic pursuits weaken our collective resolve and undermine the very foundations of the United Nations.”

Nigeria’s Commitment to Multilateralism:

Reiterating Nigeria’s long-standing commitment to global cooperation, Tinubu recalled the country’s history with the UN, beginning 65 years ago as the 99th member-state. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to fostering peace and development and called for a strengthened multilateral approach that aligns with the ideals expressed by the nation’s founding Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

Concerns Over Africa’s Stability:

Tinubu also addressed the alarming rise in unconstitutional changes of government and military coups across Africa, attributing these setbacks to the lack of economic development and sustained peace. He stressed that democracy in Africa remains vulnerable without the necessary support for economic growth and stability.

Conclusion:

President Tinubu’s address was a clarion call for unity and action, urging world leaders to prioritize global needs over national interests. His plea for inclusivity and cooperation resonated as a stark reminder of the essential role that multilateralism must play in securing a peaceful and prosperous future for all nations.
